Choco
“The Colombian film Choco has been selected to be shown at the Berlin International Film Festival, organizers confirmed Wednesday. Appearing in the festival’s Panorama category, “Choco” is the debut film from Colombian director Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza. The film focuses on an Afro-Colombian woman who is forced to leave her rural home due to violence and poverty.” via
About ten years ago, having graduated film school in Los Angeles and relocating to NYC, I was excited to see my very first Columbian film. It was at the African Diaspora Film Festival at Film Anthology and billed as the first Columbian films with Afro Columbians as key characters and integral to the plot and narrative. As an Afro United States of American, the film felt inauthentic, to me. When the director stepped out to do his Q&A, I quickly realized why. He, the director, looked like most every other director - not Afro Columbian, but European, billed as a Columbian.
